How to Buy Gold Jewelry

Tuesday May 16, 2006
Gold is as wearer-friendly as it is beautiful. Pure gold doesn't react with other elements to create tarnish, a residue that can stain our skin. Gold can be manipulated into nearly any shape, from tiny but durable strands to large, paper-thin sheets. Its color can be changed by mixing-in other metals. All the changes produce variations in the gold we wear and the variations affect quality and price in ways that we should all understand before we buy gold jewelry. 14K gold is a gold alloy, a mixture of gold and other metals. 24K gold is pure gold, but very soft. Some people use it for jewelry, but 18K (a higher gold content than 14K) is more common.
