This emerald pendant was said to have been an 80th birthday gift for the Chinese Emperor Qianlong in 1791, and by late 2007 its value was estimated at about $3.7 million dollars. The necklace is a good fit for May babies, since emerald is their birthstone. A fine emerald can be more expensive than a diamond of the same carat weight, but not all emeralds are valuable, and you can assume that the emeralds you find in most jewelry have been treated in some way to make them more attractive.
