It's official. Prince William and Kate Middleton are engaged, and Kate is wearing the 18 carat blue sapphire and diamond ring that once belonged to Prince William's mother, Princess Diana. The couple has dated for eight years, and most Royal-watchers felt they were coming close to announcing an engagement.
Sapphire is already a popular engagement gemstone, and a high profile wedding will probably kick its desirability up a notch. Watch for similar designs to become available before William and Kate wed in 2011.
