People either love them or hate them -- pierced earrings made with thick, decorative posts and rings, or fashioned from closed or open plugs. Getting the holes in your earlobes large enough to insert the thicker jewelry is often called gauging, or is simply referred to as stretching. No matter what you call it, you'll need to gauge the holes in your earlobes gradually, because stretching them too quickly is painful, and may generate scar tissue that's not attractive and can permanently injure your skin.
