What Is Hematite?

Traditional Therapy with Crystals and Gemstones

By

The word hematite is derived from the Greek word for red, but most examples of hematite you'll encounter will be metallic gray in color. An iron oxide, hematite ranks at 5.5 - 6.5 on the Mohs Scale (vs. diamond at 10).

Hematite can be ground and then magnetized before it is reconstituted -- watch for hematite magnets when you shop for the stone.

Hematite Used for Healing

  • Hematite is recognized as a grounding stone
  • Hematite is believed to help alleviate anemia and other blood and circulatory conditions
  • The stone may help cleanse toxins from the blood and some organs, including the kidneys
  • Hematite is sometimes used to improve memory and aid concentration

My gemstone healing articles are a quick introduction to traditional beliefs that specific crystals and gemstones can be used in ways that go beyond simple body decor. If you are reading this page, you must be interested in crystal healing; for more in-depth information, consult with an alternative health care practitioner or enroll in a crystal therapy course of study.
