No matter whether you love their looks -- or not -- celebrities are often trend-setters in jewelry and every other segment of the fashion world. Sometimes the trends are actually set by stylists who dress celebrities for red carpet walks, but a trend is just as likely to emerge when a member of the paparazzi snaps a candid shot of a celebrity who's trying to live the 'normal' life that most of us take for granted.
Much of the elegant jewelry celebs wear to events like the SAG Awards is on loan from well-known designers who offer their own jewelry and vintage pieces, but it isn't unusual to see lower-cost replicas emerge that borrow heavily from those designer creations.
Neil Lane Jewlry at the SAG Awards

Many celebrities wore Neil Lane jewelry to the 2012 SAG Awards -- Lane's jewelry is always a popular choice at celebrity events.
- Diane Lane wore a diamond, sapphire and platinum bracelet
- Sarah Hyland chose diamonds and platinum, too, for her earrings and a bracelet.
- Katrina Bowden -- another set of jewelry fashioned from diamonds and platinum, earrings and a ring
- Melissa McCarthy's SAG Awards chandelier earrings were fashioned from both black and white diamonds set in platinum. Her platinum cocktail ring was made from the same choice of gemstones.
- Glee's Naya Rivera wore diamond and platinum chandelier earrings, ring and bracelet.
- Another Glee cast member, Jayma Mays, wore platinum and diamond earrings with opal pendants that added subtle color.
- Jennifer Carpenter went with more colorful jewelry, too, wearing garnet, diamond and platinum earrings and a similarly styled cocktail ring.
- Mary Steenburgen's and platinum chandelier earrings were paired with multiple diamond and platinum bracelets.
- Ahna O’Reilly chose platinum earrings and a wide cuff bracelet, both set with diamonds.
- Linda Grey wore diamond and platinum chandelier earrings, several wide diamond and platinum bracelets and a diamond and platinum cocktail ring.
- Angela Kinsey wore diamond and platinum cluster earrings, along with a bracelet and a ring.
- Brooke Anderson chose diamond and platinum chandelier earrings, too, and diamond and platinum bangles. The jewelry was lovely, but I felt it was too dark and massive for her pastel gown.
- Nancy O’Dell chose diamond and gold earrings, necklace and cuff to wear with her SAG Awards ensemble.
Fred Leighton Jewelry at the SAG Awards

Several celebrities walked the SAG Awards red carpet wearing vintage jewelry from Fred Leighton.Meryl Streep chose 1920's carved citrine and sapphire pendant earrings and an 18 karat gold moonstone and sapphire ring from the 1940's. Michelle Williams chose the same two time periods, wearing an 18 karat gold bracelet and diamond and platinum line bracelet. A Forevermark diamond ring was slipped onto one finger. Tilda Swinton wore a vintage 18 karat gold and diamond bracelet. Glenn Close's old-mine cut diamond earrings (5.50 carats each) were set in platinum and gold. Her 1920's platinum ring held a 13.0 carat cushion cut diamond. Kristen Wiig's diamond lattice choker (in silver on gold) dates from the 19th Century, and so does the diamond bangle bracelet she wore. Kristen also slipped on diamond stud earrings, a diamond and onyx ring and a 19th Century gold and diamond navette shaped ring. Kyra Sedgwick's jewelry dated from the 19th Century forward. She wore gold pendant earrings, a gold and rose-cut diamond snake bracelet, a gold bracelet with yellow enamel details, a gold citrine ring and another ring set with a fancy colored orange-yellow diamond. Dianna Agron went vintage, too, in mostly 19th Century designs that included diamond and aquamarine pendant earrings, a diamond lattice bracelet and a diamond and pearl bracelet, all set in silver on gold. Her diamond and sapphire ring was set in platinum. Christine Baranski wore 1950's white and yellow diamond geometric pendant earrings and an emerald-cut diamond bracelet, both set in platinum.

Many other jewelry designers were represented at the SAG Awards, including:
- Angelina Jolie wore vintage hoop earrings and a cuff bracelet from House of Lavande.
- Emily Watson chose Wildflower Three Drop Earrings from De Beers Diamond Jewellers. The earrings were styled with white found brilliant diamonds set in 18 karat white gold. They retail for $15,000.
- Harry Winston jewelry was Jessica Chastain's choice for the night. She wore platinum earrings set with sapphire and 54+ carats of diamonds, a platinum sapphire and diamond (15 carats) ring and a platinum line bracelet set with 75+ carats of diamonds.
- Berenice Bejo's platinum band, from Chopard, was set with 70 diamonds (8 carats total).
