Top 8 Chain Necklaces

By Carly Wickell, About.com

Layered necklaces continue to be a popular look. Multiple chains, often strung with charms and beads, are one version of the style. Just as popular are multi-stranded necklaces made from beads of varying shapes, sizes and colors. The necklaces in this collection are ready-made for layering, but don't hesitate to mix and match your own jewelry. Raid your jewelry box and stack a few necklaces around your neck. Do you like the look? Keep experimenting until you do.

1. Multiple Chain Necklace with Charms and Beads

Five chains in differing styles and lengths make up this necklace. The shortest chain hugs your neck like a choker and the others drape under it, stopping at varying levels. Each chain is set with charms, and some of the charms and pendants include sparkling Swarovski crystals.

2. Multi-Strands of Freshwater Pearls

Freshwater pearls make their way around the multiple, organic looking strands of this contemporary necklace. Pearls are held in place by visible, but delicate knots. A sterling silver clasp secures the back of the necklace.

3. Multi-Gem Drop Necklace

Colored gemstones come together in a big way in this three-stranded necklace. It's a colorful combination of multicolored tourmalines, peridots, freshwater pearls and burgundy garnets. A green tourmaline pendant hangs at the center of the necklace. Sterling silver spacers separate some of the gems and sterling is repeated to drape the pendant. The necklace is held securely in place with a lobster claw clasp. The necklace is 18" long (available in longer and shorter lengths).

4. Triple Strand Vermeil Choker

Swarovski crystals, pearls and citrine are strung together on this vermeil chain necklace. It looks like three chains, but two of the segments are actually secured to the front of the main chain where they drop a total of 4" for a layered and fringed look.

5. Stein & Blye Two Strand Necklace with Pendant

Layers of gold-plated chain are adorned with freshwater pearls, faceted glass, quartz and tiger eye. The pendants and surrounding components have a fringy appearance, one with clusters of chain and gems and the other with a large tiger eye at its end.

6. Affordable Triple-Strand Chain with Colorful Beads

Colorful lucite beads and pendants of different shapes are used to adorn this triple-strand gold tone chain necklace. The necklace is adjustable from 18" to 21" and is more affordable than similar necklaces made with gemstones--you get the look without the higher price tag.

7. Sterling Silver Heart Necklace with Chains

A unique chain and pendant necklace with a wide sterling silver heart that hangs from a delicate silver. Three matching chains are attached to the heart, forming loops that dangle gracefully below it. This necklace design seems to have been influenced by the Art Deco style.

8. Long Chunky Chain with Cutout Spacers

This 38" sterling silver chain has oval scalloped separators with cut-out embellishments. It's a bold necklace that gets attention without overwhelming the rest of your ensemble.
