By , About.com Guide

Harry Winston - Birth and Death Dates:

Born March 1, 1896. Died December 8, 1978.

Harry Winston - Background:

Harry Winston was an American jeweler who became famous for the fine quality of diamonds, watches and other jewels offered by his firm, Harry Winston, Inc., which opened in New York City in 1932.

Links to Famous Jewels:

Harry Winston owned numerous famous jewels during his lifetime, including the Hope Diamond, which he donated to the Smithsonian Institution in 1958. Two of many well known sales by Harry Winston, Inc., were the 69+ carat diamond that Richard Burton bought for Elizabeth Taylor and canary diamond earrings purchased by the Duchess of Windsor. It's said that Harry Winston often carried a multi-million dollar diamond in his pocket. Today, you'll nearly always see Harry Winston jewelry on the red carpet at the Oscar presentations and other awards ceremonies.

Harry Winston, Inc., Today:

Aber Diamond Corporation, a Canadian firm that owns interest in a diamond mine, purchased controlling interest of Harry Winston, Inc., in 2004. The acquisition came after a long legal battle between Mr. Winston's sons, which many analysts feel hindered the company's sound business practices, deprived the company of funds, and made a sale inevitable. You'll find Harry Winston salons in New York, Beverly Hills, Paris, Geneva, Tokyo and other locations.
